A lot has to do with it “hitting home”.
My wife Mary Troy, was born and raised outside of Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. Like in the movie, she came to the US in the 1970s seeking employment. She was homesick when she meets an Italian man – me (not 100% Italian but as far as my father was concern, we were), falls in love (we’re engaged 6 weeks after our first date) and while I don’t know of a late flame back in Ireland before we were married there a year later, the movie does hit home in a very moving way.
Ironically, the star of the movie lived where I grew up and loved going to the very diner where my wife worked, and where we first met.
I will need to watch “Brooklyn” numerous times more before I can say the lines as I do when I watch “The Quiet Man” (which we hope to show as a special event around St. Patrick’s Day next year in Spring Lake – details this winter).
